Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a common but often misunderstood condition where tissue within the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This can cause symptoms like pelvic pain, painful periods, heavy bleeding, pain during intercourse, difficulties with fertility, bowel and bladder changes around your cycle.

  • Because symptoms can vary widely and overlap with other conditions, diagnosing endometriosis can be very challenging. Understanding endometriosis and what this means for you, through education is also important. Imaging tests such as a pelvic ultrasound is useful, but not diagnostic. A laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) is the only way of confirming endometriosis that hasn’t been identified on other imaging modalities such as an ultrasound scan. A laparoscopy can diagnose and assess the extent of the disease.

  • Treatment is highly individualised and depends on your symptoms, age, and family planning goals. Surgical removal of endometriosis tissue to relieve symptoms and improve fertility is recommended. Hormonal treatments such as the Mirena is the gold standard to prevent progression of disease.

  • Holistic care is important - lifestyle advice, physical activity, looking after your mental health and complementary treatments to support your overall well-being is reviewed. The goal is to help you understand your condition and what it means for you. I want you to regain control over your health and improve your quality of life, through ongoing support every step of the way.
