Fertility Issues.

Infertility affects one in four couples and can be a time of significant stress for anyone affected. There are many causes of infertility, but it can also be unexplained. Understanding the possible causes is the first step toward finding the right solution.

Preconceptual counselling is important for anyone who may have been told they may have issues conceiving or just want some understanding and reassurance of your own fertility potential. This includes factors such as PCOS or an irregular cycle, possible endometriosis or previously diagnosed endometriosis, tubal factor problems such as a previous ectopic pregnancy or hydrosalpinxes’ or a family history of fertility issues. Seeing someone to get an understanding of your ovarian reserve and fertility potential is extremely advantageous before you start trying for a baby.

Trying to conceive can be a very difficult time emotionally, mentally and physically. You may have not yet been able to conceive, or are able to but have had miscarriages. Being able to talk through where you are at and get some guidance around what your options are going forward is incredibly beneficial. Often in these difficult times continuity of care can make a significant difference.

It is important to get a detailed history to evaluate your situation and identify any underlying issues to create a tailored plan for your fertility journey.

Common Causes of Infertility.

  • Difficulty conceiving after 12 months (or 6 months if over age 35) of unprotected intercourse may indicate an underlying fertility issue.

  • Two or more pregnancy losses warrant further investigation as there may be a hormonal, genetic, or anatomical issue that requires further investigation.

  • A condition where the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus, which can cause inflammation, pain and affect fertility.

  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods can signal ovulation problems, making it harder to conceive.

  • A hormonal imbalance that can interfere with ovulation and cause of infertility.

  • A reduced number or quality of eggs, often related to age or other factors, can impact fertility.

  • Sperm quality, count, and motility are important in conception and may require a semen analysis to assess.
